Even with the best-case scenario of countries fully implementing their climate plans and achieving net-zero emissions, the expected peak temperature rise is a staggering 1.8 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This is a ticking time bomb, and the consequences are dire.
The report highlights the devastating impacts of this temperature rise, including the melting of ice sheets, sea ice, glaciers, and permafrost, leading to rising sea levels and altered water availability. For instance, glaciers could lose over a quarter of their mass by 2100, causing a 9-12.5 cm rise in sea levels and permanent changes in water resources. These findings are particularly poignant given the recent flash floods in Nepal and Tibet, which claimed over 1,000 lives and were triggered by a glacier collapse.
The UNEP's Executive Director, Inger Andersen, emphasizes the urgency of the situation, stating that remaining above 1.5 degrees Celsius will lead to severe and irreversible consequences. Extreme heatwaves, sea-level rise, ecosystem collapse, and the risk of irreversible tipping points in global systems like the West Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, and the Amazon rainforest are all potential outcomes. These tipping points, while uncertain in timing and severity, could reshape the world as we know it.
The report suggests a 'peak and decline' pathway as the best option to minimize the magnitude and duration of the temperature overshoot. This strategy involves immediate and sustained cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, including methane, and a transition to net-zero emissions. Long-term net-negative emissions, achieved through Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) techniques, are also crucial. Afforestation and other methods of carbon capture and storage are essential components of this approach.
The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, echoes the urgency, stating that the overshoot above 1.5 degrees must be minimized and short-lived. This requires a significant boost in ambition and action. The world must come together to implement these measures, as the consequences of inaction are catastrophic.
